Believe it or not,
You DO Live on a Positive Planet
By Amy Phillips-Gary
A front page headline of our local newspaper dubs the year
"sick" and "stormy." You may have seen or heard about
heart-wrenching natural disasters, economic hardships and
personal challenges that would seem to lend credence to
that headline. In fact, it might appear that there's not
much going well on this planet of ours lately. This is
depressing news to consider.
Not only is news of this sort depressing, it can also stir
up worries and fears. What is happening to our world? Are
we truly on a downward spiral of dwindling resources and
increasing violence and greed?
My response to that question is no! Believe it or not,
you, me, and all of us DO indeed live on a positive planet.
The word "positive" is used to describe conditions that
are affirming, uplifting, and confident. It may seem
unrealistic or just plain crazy for me to assert the
positivity of our planet right now, but I maintain this
declaration and here are a few reasons why...
There's a lot of great stuff happening that simply goes
unnoticed!
How wide is your gaze? Too many times we hone in on
what's displeasing to us in our lives and the world around
us. You might find yourself fixated with frustration and
irritation on your neighbor's yard because he or she has
stacks of wood, broken down cars or trash piled up. But
what about the rest of your environment? Perhaps your
intense and limited focus on what seems like a "trashy" or
neglected yard prevents you from enjoying the crocus blooms
peeking up through the snow in that same yard. Or you may
not even recognize that most of the people who live near
you actually do care for their spaces in ways that you
appreciate. Instead, all you can seem to see on your
street is the one yard that causes you distress.
How real is what I think I am seeing anyway? Despite the
evidence that appears to support my own upset, worry,
fears and criticisms, I continually remind myself that
there are always multiple ways of looking at the same
situation or condition. In fact, I wonder how solid and
"real" that purported situation is to begin with. How many
times have I recalled an experience only to hear a very
different account of the same time and place from a friend
or family member?
It really comes down to what you choose to focus your
attention upon and what you believe to be real. Does this
mean that you intentionally blind yourself to or deny
conditions that you'd like to see changed? Not
necessarily. What widening your gaze does is allow you to
acknowledge that there are just as many-- if not more--
situations, people, conditions, and things that can uplift
and enrich you as those that don't. You can choose to make
changes even as you celebrate all of the great happenings
you are surrounded by-- including you, yourself. But only
if you choose to see those positives and offer your
attention primarily to them.
The Law of Attraction is always in operation.
Have you ever been in a room filled with people and you
notice a palpable sense of irritation or even anger? It's
like you walked into a space where it seemed everyone was
out to get everyone else. Nobody appeared to be happy.
It's also usually the case that the dissatisfied energy
quickly rubs off on you as you become part of that out of
sorts group. This is the Law of Attraction at work.
Like attracts like. When you focus your attention on the
negative emotions you perceive among this group of people,
it doesn't take long for your own energy and experience to
become a match for what you are perceiving. Even when you
leave that room with the angry people, you probably carry
that energy with you-until you make a choice to shift your
attention and attract a different experience.
The opposite situation can also occur. What a treat when
you feel surrounded by those who seem supportive, light and
fun! Any obstacles that face this group are quickly
addressed and then you all move along with whatever project
or activity you are engaged in. Is it the chemistry of the
group of people that are influencing you or is it your own
beliefs and perceptions of this particular group and
situation? According to the Law of Attraction, the power
lies within your own beliefs and expectations and how
readily you bring yourself into alignment with what you
want.
This is a simplified way of looking at the Law of
Attraction, of course. But the point is, if you perceive
yourself, your life and your planet as in peril, damaged,
limited, less than, or in need of saving, that's the
reality you will tend to attract. If, on the other hand,
you begin to notice what's beautiful, thriving and abundant
more of the time, you will begin to live more of the time
in that reality.
Yes, there are many forces at work in the universe. There
are many many beings offering different and sometimes
conflicting influences to our world and even our personal
lives. And you may not believe that simply thinking
different thoughts will make anything change. It is a
choice that only you can make.
Try it!
Set aside a month, a few weeks or even 1 hour a day to
experiment with the Law of Attraction. Give yourself a
chance to see how it feels to intentionally focus in on
what you appreciate, what you want, what you are hopeful
about, and then believe anything is possible. Make it your
goal to search for the good stuff in your life and world
and celebrate what you find. Take notice of how you feel
in your body as you do this experiment. What changes do
you notice in your life? You may find that as you widen
your gaze and expand your perceptions of reality it becomes
easier to see more and more of the positive planet. You may
even be astounded to realize that it's been there all along.
